Following the completion of the Helix, Chapter I project, I was
once again commissioned to work on the watch user manual for
Chapter II of the project.
Where Chapter I had focused on the Scuba lifestyle as its inspiration,
Chapter II was to be inspired by the early United States Space Program,
with specific emphasis on the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions.
As I had with the first chapter, I really latched on the the subject matter.
I performed an exhaustive degree of research for the job, reading a
number of books on the subject, with topics ranging from the history
of the program to the physical and mathematical specifics of space
flight technology. I also watched basically every documentary and
television series I could find that dealt with the early days of the
American space program. I even traveled to Kennedy Space Center
in Florida to further my research.
I had always been interested in space exploration, but working on this
project really opened my eyes to the impressive levels of intrepidness
and ingenuity possessed by everyone involved with the program during
this
period. I am now a bona fide "space case."
For the style of the illustrations I produced for this project, I reached back
toward the idiosyncrasies of advertisement illustration at this time.
I tried to stay true to the predominant color pallet found in
magazine illustrations from this period.
